Growing up, I always loved school and worked hard, but I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do in life. Coming from a small charter school with limited resources, I knew I needed to look beyond the classroom to explore career paths. Most of the programs I found had high costs, which made them out of reach for my family. That’s why finding SMASH, a free STEM program for students like me, felt like striking gold. I didn’t even know what STEM meant at the time, but the fact that this opportunity was available to students from low income backgrounds made me feel seen and valued. It opened a door I didn’t know existed.
