What have you been doing post OSA?

Since leaving Oakland School for the Arts, my journey has been quite eventful. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and recently embarked on a new academic pursuit by enrolling in a Post-Graduate program for Naturopathic Medicine at the College of Naturopathic Medicine in the United Kingdom. My studies are set to begin this year, marking the start of an exciting new chapter that will also involve studying abroad. In the meantime, I've been gaining valuable experience at Kaiser Permanente, where I'm actively involved in health education, specializing in pediatric care, managing chronic diseases, weight loss, and behavioral health for patients.

Are there any career highlights that you'd like us to share and celebrate?

How did attending OSA impact your life and career?

Attending Oakland School for the Arts for Dance was truly transformative for both my personal growth and career trajectory. It was undeniably one of the best decisions I've ever made. While academic studies are crucial, I firmly believe that every student benefits from a balance of academic learning and creative exploration. OSA provided the perfect blend of both worlds, allowing us to delve into what truly brings us joy beyond the confines of textbooks. This environment provided the space for me to connect with my innermost self and establish a solid foundation for my identity. These experiences continue to shape me as I navigate through life, providing me with a reservoir of creative skills that bring me immense joy and allow me to perceive life through various lenses. The ability to cultivate different perspectives is invaluable and has greatly enriched both my personal life and professional endeavors, allowing me to approach challenges with creativity and adaptability.

What does being from Oakland (or the greater Bay Area) mean to you?

Though I am from Hawaii, growing up in the Bay Area and going to an art school in the heart of Oakland, it offered a diverse and vibrant cultural experience. I valued being immersed in a community filled with creativity and innovation and being surrounded by like-minded individuals and inspirational mentors. This atmosphere fosters artistic exploration and encouraged me to push boundaries and that my unique educational journey is precious, which is a great opportunity for students to experience. Growing up in the greater Bay Area and Oakland means celebrating the unique blend of cultures, arts, and cuisines that thrive in our region. It's about being part of a community that values social justice, activism, and community engagement. Oakland and the Bay Area are not just where I'm from; they are an integral part of who I am, influencing my values, perspectives, and aspirations.

What is your fondest memory of being a student at OSA?

One of the fondest memories I have at Oakland School for the Arts was choreographing my own dance piece during my senior year for the Spring Dance show in 2014. Witnessing my creation come to life backstage over those three nights, alongside vibrant and talented dancers who were also my closest friends, remains one of the highlights of my life.

Please share which teacher/class at OSA had the greatest impact on you and why:

I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for my 8th grade teacher, Ms. Guerin. Her soft-spoken demeanor and unwavering belief in me have left a lasting impact on my life. She taught me that nothing is out of reach, that anything is possible if I believe in myself. Thank you for being such an inspiring teacher and for instilling in me the confidence to pursue my dreams. You've made a difference in my life, and I'll always cherish the lessons you've taught me.
